Reading Programs & Tutoring

• Halifax Public Libraries:

  • The Paws to Read program gives kids the chance to build their confidence by reading to a dog - they'r excellent listeners!

  • The Leading Readers Program engages struggling or reluctant readers from Grades 1 - 5. Kids are paired with a teen. 

  • Children's Reading Support program is a free tutoring and mentorship program for both Sackville and North End Halifax communities. 

  • TD Summer Reading Club is a program that encourages kids to read over their summer break from school. Win cool prizes!​​

• Cole Harbour Foundation offers free math and literacy tutoring​

• Scottish Rite Learning Centre for Children - Halifax offers tutoring support

• bgc offers tutoring supports across Nova Scotia. Contact your local chapter to see what programs are available.

Skill Development & Future career planning

• Youth WORX offers employment to youth between 16 and 24. They offer paid jobs and training, including workshops. Youth can also earn high school credits. 

​​

• Youth Skilled Trade Camps offer hands-on work experience for youth in Grades 7 through 9 across the province at no cost. Opportunties include carpentry, welding, automotive service repair, culinary and more. 

​​

• Halifax Regional Municipality offers students and young adults looking for summer jobs. Positions are with Parks & Recreation. 

​​

• Teen Volunteer Opportunties are available through the Public Libraries around Nova Scotia.

​​

• For youth interested in working with animals, they may want to try Volunteering with the SPCA. They have volunteer opportunties available for youth under 18, as well as those over 18 years of age. 

​​

• Many colleges and universities offer fall Open Houses for youth planning to apply to their programs. Here are some post secondary programs offering Open House opportunities: NSCC, SMU, DAL.
